Zebra interactions with other species

Rietvlei Nature Reserve, in Gauteng South Africa, is a well-stocked nature especially seeing that it is in close proximity to Centurion and other built-up areas.

The reserve has a zebra population of just over 200 animals, and they have been the focus of this project in recent years. During visits made in 2025 we have often noted which other species they appear to mix with and that is reflected in the chart.

Out of the antelopes they are often seen with herds of Eland nearby or they may be found following the same pathway through the veld. Although we have seen them mix with Blesbok fairly regularly it may only be with one or two individuals.

The Cape Buffalo have their diets supplemented with lucerne during the dry winter months and the zebras are not shy to approach the food at times.

Surprisingly there is often an Ostrich nearby the zebra herd. I am not sure which species initiates this interaction, but it is interesting to watch. Other birds that I have seen with the zebras are Cattle Egret and occasionally Helmeted Guineafowl.

We will keep recording these interactions during future visits to Rietvlei and will keep the site updated accordingly.
