About uMngeni Nature Reserve
uMngeni Valley Nature Reserve is located near the town of Howick in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands. The town is very well known for the Howick Falls where the Umgeni River falls 95 metres into the valley below.
The uMngeni Valley Nature Reserve is also very scenic. What is most noticeable is the steep drop from the top of the valley to the river below. The reserve hosts various habitats including grassland, woodland and forests which in turn allows a wide variety of mammals, birds, plants and more to be found.
Amongst the larger mammals one may see Plains Zebra, Giraffe, Blue Wildebeest, Bushbuck, Nyala, Impala and more. Don’t forget to photograph the zebras and send them in to Wildstripes.
One can stay in the reserve or visit it on a day trip. The reserve is used extensively for education purposes. It is run by WESSA who run a number of programs for learners.
