Information about Roodeplaat Dam Nature Reserve
Roodeplaat Dam Nature Reserve is located in Gauteng, about 25 km from Pretoria. The dam was constructed in 1956 and was originally named Pienaar’s River Dam. This dam is one of the sources of water for Pretoria.
The nature reserve is located on the eastern shore of the dam and there is a large picnic area located on the shore of the dam. It has a simple network of roads including a loop road and a road linking the entrance gate with the picnic spots at the waters edge. Visitors may also walk along well-signposted trails.
The vegetation in the reserve is sourish mixed bushveld. Savanna habitat dominates large areas but there are also areas of woodland with various thorn trees being the dominant vegetation.
Besides a few Plains Zebra the mammals that you may encounter include Giraffe, Kudu, Waterbuck, Warthog, Impala and Vervet Monkey.
