Overview of Polokwane Game Reserve
Just as the town of Pietersburg changed its name to Polokwane, so too this nature reserve was renamed from Pietersburg Nature Reserve to Polokwane Nature Reserve. One thing has stayed the same and that it couldn’t be any closer to the town! The entrance to the park is just off the N1 freeway.
The reserve is 2,800 hectare in size and the major habitats are Acacia Savanna and Grassland. Birders are attracted to this area, and the reserves bird list is around 350 species. It also boasts a wide range of mammals including White Rhino, Sable, Tsessebe, Blue Wildebeest, Honey Badger and, of course, Plains Zebras.
There are a few historical sites and a picnic area in the reserve. Although there is not a large road network, and the main road is a one-way loop, it is still a great place to visit.
