Pilanesberg Game Reserve, South Africa
The North West province of South Africa is the location of one of South Africa’s most popular game reserves. Pilanesberg Game Reserve is within a 2 hour drive from the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria and is a great destination for a weekend trip or longer.
The reserve is located on the site of an ancient volcano. All that is left of the volcano is three concentric rings of hills up to 24 km across. It is estimated that the last eruption occurred some 1,200 million years ago.
The reserve is well-stocked with mammals including Plains Zebra. The Big 5 are also present and rhinos are a common sight. Pilanesberg is also a great place for birdwatching with approximately 360 species having been recorded.
The number of Plains Zebras in the park varies year by year but the number is around 1,000 at present. They can be found in a variety of habitats within the park and are often seen in the grasslands and savanna around Mankwe Dam.
