Klapperkop – a nature reserve with a fort and great views
Klapperkop Nature Reserve is located on a series of hills to the south of Pretoria in South Africa. The reserve is named after Fort Klapperkop which can still be visited. The fort was built during the Anglo-Boer war with construction finishing in January 1898. The location of the fort gives commanding views of the surrounding countryside. The fort was equipped with some cannons which would have provided defence against advancing British troops.
Today the fort is surrounded by a peaceful nature reserve. The reserve is 285 hectares in extent and is stocked with a few zebra. There are plans to introduce a few other larger mammals. The vegetation in the reserve is a combination of mixed bushveld and grassland.
The reserve is a popular exercise spot with joggers and cyclist making good use of the good tar road that runs through it. The reserve offers the best views of Pretoria and is worth a visit just to take a good look at the city below.
