Zebra of the week – 12 October 2026

ZAKL004 at Klapperkop Nature Reserve, Pretoria

Klapperkop is a small nature reserve located just south of the Pretoria CBD. Its hilly terrain offers fantastic views over the city in all directions.

The reserve is popular with runners, walkers, and cyclists, but it isn’t really a place for casual exercise. Many visitors come simply to escape the city for a few moments and enjoy the scenery. Entrance is free.

So far, we have identified 27 individual Plains Zebras in the reserve. Today we are looking at ZAKL004, which was part of the first herd we recorded at Klapperkop.

He is a stallion and a member of the Bravo herd. He is often seen grazing a short distance away from the rest of the group, keeping a watchful eye on his herd while enjoying a bit of space.

I have photographed him on four occasions between 6 April 2025 and 20 September 2025. Like most of the zebras in this small but popular nature reserve, he is not concerned about traffic or people.

On the 20th September 2026 I took a number of photos of ZAKL004 and was lucky enough to get shots of both its left and right sides. Here it seems to be admiring the view but is probably just checking up on its herd.
